It was a political battle in the Senate chamber over the security decree. Senators from the PD, M5s and Avs staged a protest against the measure, which is expected to be converted into law today, Wednesday 4 June. Opposition senators sat in front of the government benches shouting 'Shame shame shame' and demanding that the conference of group leaders be convened. Senate President Ignazio la Russa pointed out that he would not interrupt the session because there were precedents, but then suspended the chamber, speaking to one of the opposition group leaders. The session then resumed with the explanations of vote on the confidence requested last night by the executive on the measure in the text already approved by the Chamber.
In the end, the Senate chamber approved the trust asked by the government on the decree that lays down provisions on public safety, protection of personnel in service, and victims of usury and prison regulations. There were 109 votes in favour, 69 against, one abstained. The yes vote of confidence on the 39-article text already approved by the Chamber of Deputies constitutes the final parliamentary green light on the measure, which had to be converted into law by 10 June. The decree-law takes up in substance what was contained in the Ddl on security that was subject to a complex examination first in Montecitorio and then in Palazzo Madama, where the landing in the House was 'frozen' after the passing of the Dl.
There is a clear split in opinion between the majority and the opposition. The majority believes that the regulations provide answers in terms of security and legality, while the opposition considers them punitive and repressive.
Still tensions and shouting in the Chamber over the security decree
After this morning's adjournment, there was tension in the chamber of Palazzo Madama during the intervention of FdI senator and chairman of the Senate Constitutional Affairs Commission Alberto Balboni on the Security decree. Pd and M5s senators came shouting down from their benches, going towards those of the majority, after Balboni had said: 'I understand that you want to be on the side of criminality'.
Group leaders' conference convened
After the protest of the MPs of the PD, M5s and Avs, who sat in front of the government benches, the group leader was convened. The oppositions staged a sit-in by sitting, arms crossed, in the space of the hemicycle in front of the government benches to call out their opposition to the punishments against passive resistance in the decree. The centre-left senators sat on the floor with crossed legs, some holding signs reading 'Denounce us all' or 'Shame on you'.
