With a Dpcm (decree of the President of the Council of Ministers) signed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, explains a note from Palazzo Chigi, Italian Army Corps Gen. Francesco Paolo Figliuolo has been appointed deputy director of the Foreign Intelligence and Security Agency (AISE). The appointment is for a period of two years. The Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic was informed of the appointment.

From anti-Covid commissioner to post-earthquake, Figliuolo lands in intelligence

A life of assignments in crucial and diverse fields for Figliuolo. Born in Potenza, he is married to Mrs Enza, has two sons, Salvatore and Federico, and a grandson, Francesco Emanuele. During his career, he has gained experience and held many and varied assignments in the Armed Forces Army, inter-force and international environments. As a mountain artillery officer, he gained his first command experience in the province of Cuneo, at the 'Aosta' Artillery Group in Saluzzo. After his experience in the multinational field at the Sfor Command in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the years 1999-2000 he became Commander of the "Aosta" Group, during which time he led the unit on a mission in Kosovo. Subsequently, he became the Commander of the 1st Mountain Artillery Regiment in Fossano, in the years 2004-2005; from September 2009, he held the post of Deputy Commander of the 'Taurinense' Brigade to take over, without interruption, its command until October 2011. The positions held during his career allowed him to gain experience in all areas of the Armed Force: in operational planning in the NATO context, in logistics and procurement, holding the position of Head of the IV Logistics Department at the Army General Staff in the years 2015-2016. His international experience as Military Representative of the National Authority and Commander of the National Contingent in Afghanistan, as part of the Isaf operation (2004-2005) and as Commander of the NATO Forces in Kosovo (2014-2015) are of absolute importance. From 2016 to 2018 he was Chief of the General Office of the Chief of Defence Staff, gaining significant experience in the inter-force sphere at the highest level, to then become Army Logistics Commander in the years 2018-2021. Since 26 December 2021, he has been the Inter-Forces Summit Operations Commander.

From 1 March 2021 to 31 March 2022, he served as Extraordinary Commissioner for the implementation and coordination of the measures needed to contain and combat the Covid-19 epidemic emergency. By Decree of the President of the Republic, on 10 July 2023, he was appointed Extraordinary Commissioner for Reconstruction. In the course of his civilian and military studies, Army General Figliuolo obtained degrees in Political Science, Strategic Sciences (with related 2nd level Master's degree), International and Diplomatic Sciences, and attended the 119th Higher Course of General Staff, the 3rd Higher Course of Interforce General Staff and the 92nd Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome. He has been awarded numerous honours, including the Decorations of Cavaliere dell'Ordine Militare d'Italia and Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana, a Croce d'Oro and a Croce d'Argento al Merito dell'Esercito, the Nato Meritorious Service Medal, the Legion of Merit Officer Class, and the Gold Medal of Merit of the Italian Red Cross. In addition, he is the author, together with the Deputy Editor of Corriere della Sera Beppe Severgnini, of the book 'Un Italiano - Quello che la vita mi ha insegnato per affrontare la sfida più grande' (An Italian - What life has taught me to face the greatest challenge), in which he retraces the milestones of his experience as Extraordinary Commissioner for the Covid-19 Emergency.
