Specialised sections of the State Police will operate to guarantee security on the metro lines in Rome, Milan and Naples. It will be called 'Polmetro', the new service announced today by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi at the end of a meeting on measures to strengthen law enforcement presence in metropolitan areas attended by mayors, prefects and quaestors.
Ad hoc agents to guard platforms and trains
.Strengthening security in urban areas, and in particular in the metros, is a need strongly felt by citizens and administrators. In Rome, with the Jubilee just around the corner, but also in Milan and Naples, it is even more so, after the repeated episodes in the news that do not stop reporting attacks, robberies, pickpocketing and beatings against defenceless passengers, even in broad daylight. Hence the Ministry of the Interior's decision to assign surveillance and intervention tasks to specialised police officers, who will control platforms and trains.
The model? The Polmetro at Milan's Cadorna M1 station
.Only one model exists today, established in 1987 in Milan through a collaboration between Atm and the Polizia di Stato. The Milan Polmetro was for a long time based in Piazza Duomo, but since March 2022 it has been transferred to the new offices in the Cadorna M1 station. During the inauguration, a protocol was signed to intensify cooperation.
Police forces in shopping centres will increase
.During the summit, Piantedosi also announced that the police force contingent will be increased in the large shopping centres. Since the beginning of 2023, a total of 3,857 units have been assigned in Rome, 1,653 in Milan and 1,314 in Naples. In addition, 205 military personnel in Rome, 174 in Milan and 116 in Naples have been assigned to security as part of the 'Safe Stations' operation.
