Seda wins the 2026 European Carton Excellence Award with a new packaging design
The innovative Da Vinci Clamshell, a cardboard food box patented by the Naples-based company, has won an award
Seda International Packaging Group has won the Food category of the 2026 European Carton Excellence Award (ECEA) with Da Vinci Clamshell, an innovative paper-based packaging solution for the foodservice sector.
Organised by Pro Carton and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA), the European Carton Excellence Award recognises excellence in packaging across Europe. Entries are assessed by a jury of packaging experts based on criteria ranging from innovation to practicality, design, production techniques and cost-effectiveness. The winners of the 2026 edition were announced during the awards ceremony held in Rome.
The Da Vinci Clamshell, a single-use food packaging solution featuring a hinged lid that opens and closes just like the two valves of a shell, is a patented innovation by Seda, as it is the first rounded paper clamshell of its kind for foodservice applications. Rather than simply adapting a conventional format to paper, Seda has redesigned the packaging, taking its cue from the shape of the food product and the way in which the consumer interacts with the packaging. The rounded top follows the natural contour of the product, helping to improve its stability and reduce lateral movement within the packaging, whilst the sloping base makes it easier to grip and remove. An intuitive opening and closing system further enhances ease of use for both foodservice operators and consumers. The design also ensures stackability. The Da Vinci Clamshell is produced using cardboard manufactured by MM Board & Paper.
The award recognises Seda’s ability to combine structural innovation, industrial performance and user experience, translating the specific needs of the foodservice industry into a distinctive, scalable and proprietary paper packaging solution.
