Serbia: Student movement wins election, Vučić concedes defeat
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - A historic victory for the student movement in Serbia’s parliamentary elections, which saw a turnout of over 70 per cent – a figure not seen for over 30 years. Former President Aleksander Vučić, the nationalist leader of the Serbian Progressive Party and a former prime minister, conceded defeat, stating that the student list would win between 135 and 140 seats, whilst his party would secure around 105.
"Serbia has won, just as we promised," said Ilija Srdanovic, a representative of the students’ list, according to reports from international news agencies. "We will never again have a tyrant in this country."
The victory of the civic list led by the student movement comes after two years of protests and demonstrations against corruption, sparked by the collapse of a bus shelter at Novi Sad railway station, in which 16 people lost their lives, which became the catalyst for public discontent and accusations of negligence and a lack of transparency on the part of the government in office.
