Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announces his resignation
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced that he will step down as President of Serbia within a few weeks. “I will remain president for a few more weeks, then I will resign,” he said during a rally organised by the ruling party, the Serbian Progressive Party, which took place in Belgrade.
Serbia has been the scene, since November 2024, to a widespread protest movement sparked by the tragic train crash in Novi Sad, which claimed 16 lives and fuelled the anger of hundreds of thousands of citizens, who regard the accident as a consequence of the rampant corruption in the country.
The demands, which initially centred on the incident, subsequently turned into calls for early elections.
On Sunday, the students organised their own demonstration in Kraljevo, in central Serbia, to promote national unity and renew their call for early elections.
28 June is an important date in Serbia: it commemorates the historic Battle of the Field of Blackbirds, in which the Ottoman army defeated the Serbs, the adoption of the first constitution, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914.
