Shots fired near the White House, one person shot by law enforcement officers

The Secret Service reported that an individual was shot by law enforcement officers near the Washington Monument. The condition of the person and the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which occurred in the area of 15th Street and Independence Avenue, were not immediately disclosed. The Secret Service urged the public to avoid the area while emergency teams responded to the scene. The White House was briefly placed on lockdown while authorities investigated the incident.

It is unclear whether the shooting had any connection to the White House or President Trump. The incident occurred a fair distance from the presidential complex. The Washington Monument is located south of the White House, just over a mile away. The intersection of Independence Avenue and 15th Street SW is just a few blocks away. The journalists present were immediately escorted off the North Lawn of the White House following the shooting and found shelter in the press room.

At the time the news broke, President Trump was inside the White House, where he was giving a speech at a small business event.
