Sileoni: ‘We need a concrete proposal from the banks regarding workers’ wages’
Fabi’s General Secretary, Lando Maria Sileoni, takes stock of the negotiations with ABI regarding the renewal of the collective agreement, which are set to resume on 9 November. He says the negotiations are ‘progressing too slowly’
The value that banks recognise for their shareholders must also be recognised for those who generate it – namely the workers who are awaiting the renewal of their employment contracts. “We expect a concrete response on wages,” states Fabi’s general secretary, Lando Maria Sileoni. And this premise has been an integral part of all the discussions over recent months, during which dialogue with the Italian Banking Association (ABI) has never ceased. However, it is not yielding the results expected by the trade unions.
Sileoni, how are the contract renewal negotiations progressing?
It’s all happening far too slowly. Major banking operations are absorbing the groups’ attention and holding up the negotiations. Often, however, they serve as an excuse. But workers cannot be left waiting in the wings whilst decisions are being made about the banks’ future.
What might break the deadlock in this situation?
A clear mandate for the ABI’s CASL (Committee for Trade Union and Labour Affairs, ed.) and a concrete proposal on salaries. Following the analysis of the situation, decisions are needed. If, once the extraordinary measures have been completed, a collective agreement is not reached, industrial action is likely to spread to the groups just as they are due to implement the pay rises.
