Today Church Road is tinged with blue, with three Italians in the round of 16. World number 1 Jannik Sinner and Grigor Dimitrov will play each other on the centre court, the third match scheduled from 2.30 p.m. (after Djokovic-deMinaur and Andreeva-Navarro), to vie for a place in the quarters. The Bulgarian, 21st in the Atp rankings, 34 years old, won over Nishioka, Moutet and Ofner in the previous rounds. The direct clashes say 4-1 for Jannik (the last win in Paris last year, the only defeat in Rome in 2020).

First though, at 12 noon, on court 2 is Flavio Cobolli who has a great chance against the veteran Marin Cilic, born in 1988: he beat him in Paris in three sets a month ago. The Croatian, however, has a different effectiveness on grass, he was a finalist here in 2017 and defeated world number 4 Jack Draper this year. For Cobolli it is the first time in the round of 16 at a Slam, the opponent has experience on his side.

Between the Cobolli and Sinner matches, in the middle, there is Lorenzo Sonego against Ben Shelton: it is the second match on court 1, starting at 2 pm (preceded by Alexandrova-Bencic). After the five-hour marathon with Nakashima, the Turinese is looking for a rematch with the American - tough and very powerful - to whom he has lost twice this year, at Roland Garros (another long battle to the fifth set) and at the Australian Open. Whoever prevails in this challenge will be on Sinner's way to the quarters.

The other eighths

Speaking of marathons, there was a very intense one yesterday between Cameron Norrie and Nicolas Jarry: the former prevailed in the fifth set after four and a half hours. In the quarters, the Briton finds Alcaraz, who struggled yesterday with Rublev, coming back from a one-set disadvantage. Successes also for Khachanov and Fritz, they clash on Tuesday.

In the women's field, which has lost several top seeds on the way (see Pegula, Gauff, Keys), the advance of world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who is in the hunt for her first title on English grass, continues: yesterday she defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-6. On court today is Iga Swiatek against Clara Tauson.
