Sinner pulls out of the US Open. Alcaraz set to compete as planned
He has decided to withdraw from the final Grand Slam of the season following weeks of consultation with his team regarding his right knee problem.
Jannik Sinner will not be playing in the 2026 US Open. The world number one has decided to pull out of the season’s final Grand Slam following several days of discussions with his team regarding his right knee injury.
The Italian had already skipped Cincinnati and Toronto – two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments – in a bid to recover in time for New York, but how he has been feeling over the last few days has not been encouraging enough.
“Despite the hard work put in by my team and the medical staff, we’ve had to make the difficult decision not to take part in the US Open this year,” wrote the world number one on social media. “We’ve been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last few days and realised that I still need time to recover from the problem with my right knee. I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, because New York holds a special place in my heart. I was really looking forward to playing again in that electric atmosphere in front of the fantastic fans.”
This withdrawal for Sinner comes on the heels of his triumph at Wimbledon and his run to the final in New York a year ago.
The Italian will therefore be unable to defend the title he won in 2024 and will have to miss out on the match against Carlos Alcaraz, who will, however, be taking his place in the draw as usual.
