Skateboarding has a legendary aura in the collective imagination and, despite being born from a rib of surfing, has built its own style, a pantheon of champions and its own culture and credibility. It has never stopped moving forward, thanks to the many youngsters who have trained on their boards in search of new and increasingly impressive evolutions (or, as they say in skateboarding, tricks). A sport that, finally, as of Tokyo 2020, has also been promoted among the Olympic disciplines. That Olympics (which took place a year later) was also attended by a (at the time) 17-year-old Italian skater of great talent, Alessandro Mazzara, who today, three years later, is returning to the Olympic Games in Paris with the declared aim of winning a medal. In the meantime, Mazzara has also become one of the members of the new Sector Team founded by the Italian watch brand Sector together with many other sports champions. 24 Hours caught up with him.
What brought you to skateboarding? A coincidence. Near my house there was a skatepark and my father, intrigued, one day decided to take me and my brother, we were kids, to see this novelty. I was immediately hooked and fell in love with it.
What is the most beautiful aspect of this sport? You have the feeling of total freedom to express your personality and your body.
When did you realise you were going pro? Seriously, it happened when I started getting results and recognition. Of course, it was a path of growth, built by constant commitment, which then led me to realise my dream.
About commitment: how do you train for competitions? Skateboarding is now like any other sport at the highest level: if you want to compete you have to be extremely professional. That means intense training and a lot of sacrifice with sessions in the gym and many, many hours on the skateboard.
