Smart #2 Interior: what the two-seater electric car is like inside

The Smart #2 unveils its interior ahead of its official debut in October at the Paris Motor Show. The most eagerly awaited model from the Sino-German brand – born of the collaboration between Daimler and Geely – has chosen Rome to showcase its interior, whilst revealing a range of details regarding the battery, dimensions, driving dynamics, trim levels and price. The choice of Italia’s capital is no coincidence: Rome is the city in the world where the most smart Fortwo cars have been sold, and where this extremely compact two-seater remains a sought-after choice for motorists who have to park on the street.

Although the photos released by Smart’s European branch give us virtually no idea of what the interior will be like – apart from a bench seat that appears to be one piece (and which already hints at future creative uses, such as carrying three people on board, obviously in breach of the rules) the interior – which we saw at the presentation in Rome – represents a significant leap forward compared to previous models. We’ll tell you more about the interior once photos of the cabin, as seen by the Italian press, are made available, rather than a series of carefully curated details designed to generate hype on social media.

Whilst it was not possible to discuss the interior, the Rome launch did, however, provide some interesting insights shared on the sidelines of the debut. The first concerns the price, which is expected to start at around 20,000 euros. The second is the arrival of a convertible version, as was the case with the Fortwo. The third is the confirmation of a future Brabus version. As for the rest, the dimensions have been confirmed as being the same as the Fortwo at 2.70 metres, whilst the range will be double that of the previous model. Also of interest is the Chinese ECA platform used, featuring a 30 kWh battery and a range of around 300 km.
