How Chinese companies took the market for domestic cleaning robots
Ever more intelligent and high-performance products: the latest frontier is the roller introduced by Narwal and Dreame
Chinese companies have conquered domestic cleaning one step at a time, without fanfare, but with a technological acceleration that in the last three years has completely changed the very idea of robot hoovers. Before, they were niche products, often with obvious limitations: unreliable maps, modest suction power, inaccurate sensors, token washing. Today, they are instead devices that combine artificial intelligence, laser navigation, 3D vision, advanced maintenance basics and an ability to wash floors that really comes close to human intervention.
The most interesting evolution concerns washing: the old circular mops, which were limited to wiping with a damp cloth, are giving way to real rollers, capable of scrubbing the floor continuously, reaching into corners and guaranteeing a removal of dirt more similar to that of professional floor washers.
And the market reflects this transformation. In recent years, the global value of domestic robots has grown rapidly, driven by the spread of the smart home and the search for solutions that concretely reduce the time spent on household chores. Estimates for the next decade speak of a sector travelling towards tens of billions of dollars, with very high annual growth rates. And within this scenario, it is precisely Chinese companies that have become protagonists: not only in terms of volumes, but also for their ability to innovate with speed, often anticipating solutions that other manufacturers introduce much later.
In this context - and also in view of the fact that at the upcoming black friday cleaning robots will be among the most frequently bought products - we decided to test two of the latest and most interesting models, both representative of this new generation of roller cleaner robots: a Narwal and a Dreame. Before we tell you how it went, it is worth saying who the companies that produce them are.
Narwal is a relatively young Chinese brand, specialising almost exclusively in robots that wash as well as vacuum. From the very beginning, it has focused on a very precise identity: rollers, advanced mops, large and complete maintenance bases, pushed automation, and a focus on washing quality. Dreame, on the other hand, has in the past been part of Xiaomi Ecosystem, a group of high-tech companies incubated or supported by the Chinese giant, with a very strong focus on motors, sensors and navigation algorithms. Dreame Technology has in recent years become one of the most recognised brands in the premium segment of domestic robots, with models integrating every possible advanced function.
