Not just orders, but strategic collaborations to be strengthened across the board: from tech and robotics to defence, as already witnessed by the ambitious Gcap programme for sixth-generation fighter aircraft, from pharmaceuticals and medicine to chemistry, from cars to machinery and intermediate goods, from space to energy. Not to mention the alliance on the political level, which looks not only at stability in the Indo-Pacific, increasingly the object of Chinese aims, but also at the global South and in particular Africa.
In a world in flames, it is an iron pact based on industry and geopolitics that Giorgia Meloni has signed with Sanae Takaichi, the only other woman in the G7, like her the first to lead her country, like her conservative and nationalist, like her called to face the challenge of demographic winter. "Friendship and harmony" (symbolically depicted in the photo of the premiers in anime version spread via social media) useful to join forces and coordinate in all multilateral bodies, from the UN to the G7.
The spirit of 'ganbaru'
The spirit? That of 'ganbaru', the Japanese word,' said Meloni, 'which does not just mean doing your best, it means doing more than your best, that is, always striving to exceed your limits, never being satisfied with where you have arrived'. The right approach, according to the Prime Minister, 'to do good for our peoples, our nations, which are great nations, heirs to great histories and which can once again be protagonists of great histories'.
The bilateral on the 160th anniversary of Italy-Japan relations
After the stop in Oman, the premier arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday, where she celebrated her birthday with her daughter Geneva and staff and thanked them with a video message on social media for the good wishes received: "Your affection has arrived, you are my strength". The meeting with her Japanese counterpart began on Thursday at 11.30am local time (3.30am Italian time) at the Kantei, the official residence of the Japanese prime minister. An important bilateral: 2026 will mark the 160th anniversary of Italy-Japan relations, which will now take a further qualitative leap forward. The strategic partnership already launched in 2023 by Meloni with Takaichi's predecessor, Fumio Kishida, becomes 'special'.
The Indo-Pacific focus
The situation in the Indo-Pacific "is getting more and more severe and it is important that we work together more and more closely," began Takaichi, who presented Meloni with the official mascot Tunku Tunku (a heart-shaped character representing nature and growth, with some drawings made by children) of the Green Expo 2027 scheduled to take place in Yokohama in 2027, announcing that Italy would be participating. Meloni, too, cited security and stability in the Indo-Pacific as the goal of the joint commitment, along with 'achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine and consolidating the peace process in the Middle East'.
