Spain: Sanchez’s wife to stand trial; her passport has been withdrawn
The Spanish First Lady faces four alleged offences: influence peddling, embezzlement, bribery and misappropriation of public funds.
Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado has ordered the indictment of the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, as well as his assistant at Moncloa, Cristina Alvarez, and the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés. This is stated in the judge’s ruling, which was viewed by LaPresse.
The Moncloa Palace is a historic building in Madrid which serves as the seat of the Presidency of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain and as the official residence of the President and his family.
Gómez faces four charges: abuse of influence, embezzlement, bribery and misappropriation.
Alvarez is charged with the same alleged offences, whilst Barrabés is charged with two offences, namely influence-peddling and corruption.
Three precautionary measures have been imposed on the First Lady: the withdrawal of her passport, a ban on leaving the country, and the obligation to report to the authorities every 15 days.
