A meeting of masters: Stefan Gierowski and Sean Scully

Sean Scully, born in Ireland and active mainly in the United States, is one of the leading exponents of contemporary abstract painting. Known for his large geometric compositions and vibrant use of colour, Scully has developed an unmistakable style that mixes formal rigour and emotional intensity. His works, often characterised by rectangular shapes or horizontal and vertical bands, explore themes of space, rhythm and light, creating a dialogue between structural simplicity and inner complexity. Stefan Gierowski, on the other hand, was one of the protagonists of the post-war Polish art scene. His career, spanning more than six decades, helped to define Poland's artistic landscape, with a strong emphasis on the use of colour as a vehicle for emotions and ideas. Gierowski, like Scully, also adopted a non-representational approach, but while Scully's art is often seen as an exploration of the formal language of painting, Gierowski's is deeply connected to his philosophical and spiritual reflections. The exhibition in Warsaw represents a fascinating confrontation between two artists who, although coming from different cultural backgrounds, share a common vision: the power of colour and abstract form as tools of universal expression.

The exhibition

The exhibition, curated by Joachim Pissarro, presents 60 works that explore the interactions between light and shadow, warmth and coldness, suggesting an almost architectural quality in their composition. Scully's geometric structure is an invitation to reflect on duality and balance, while his use of colour conveys a deep emotional charge. In contrast, Stefan Gierowski's works in the exhibition express a chromatic sensitivity that almost seems to transcend the form itself. Gierowski has always seen colour as an independent entity, capable of conveying ideas and feelings directly. His paintings, at times freer and more fluid than Scully's strict geometry, offer a sensation of movement and transformation, suggesting a vital energy flowing through space. The exhibition creates a visual dialogue between the works of the two artists, inviting the audience to explore the similarities and differences in their approach to abstraction. Both artists use non-figurative language to investigate universal issues such as time, space and human experience, but they do so with different sensibilities that reflect their respective cultural traditions.
