Stellantis recalls 320,000 Jeep hybrid models in the US due to battery fire risk
Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid models produced between 2020 and 2025 are covered by the voluntary recall
Stellantis is recalling more than 320,000 vehicles produced by its Jeep brand in the US due to the risk of batteries in plug-in hybrid models catching fire.
The high-voltage batteries may have been built with cells prone to separator damage, according to a warning issued Tuesday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Stellantis, which is undergoing a period of reorganisation of its US operations, advised motorists to park their vehicles outside and not to recharge them until the repair is completed.
The manufacturer of the Dodge and Ram brands is currently working on a solution for the battery fire risk, according to the notice. The Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid models produced between 2020 and 2025 are included in the voluntary recall.
The news of the fire risk comes as Stellantis begins to reap the benefits of measures taken to regain market share in the United States, its most important market. Shipments have begun to recover in North America after the struggling carmaker reduced inventory.
Since taking office in December, the new CEO Antonio Filosa has pledged to invest around USD 10 billion in the US to boost the company, after his predecessor Carlos Tavares had pursued cost cuts and efficiencies at the expense of new models.
