The Stelvio Olympic Sky Centre opens on 1 December
The Valtellina spa resort is the first location of Milan-Cortina ready with all its works for the Olympic event
No World Cup stages this season for Bormio (replaced by Livigno) and Cortina (which will cede the slot to Tarvisio), as the Olympic countdown has already begun in the Valtellina spa resort and the Pearl of the Dolomites.
The first five-ring medal will be awarded precisely in Bormio: the downhill race the day after the inauguration. Bormio is the first location of Milan-Cortina ready with all its works and on 1 December 2025 the inauguration of the Stelvio Olympic Sky Center and the Bormio Pentagon Center is scheduled.
Until 21 February, the Stelvio slope will be the scene of the five men's Alpine skiing competitions: in addition to the free, also combined, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. Inaugurated in 1982 and the scene of the World Championships in 1985 and 2005, the Stelvio is preparing to experience its most important moment of glory, along its 1,023 metres of altitude difference, considered the Scala of winter sports.
The work involved the starting areas, a new track for the special and a new lighting system to allow night skiing. Making the Olympic appointment even more unique will be the debut of ski mountaineering, a discipline that combines endurance and technical ability to move on skis. The races will be held at the end of the alpine programme on the specially adapted final section of the Stelvio. The programme will start on Thursday 19 February with the men's and women's sprint, and will continue on Saturday 21 with the mixed relay. Three titles are up for grabs in the discipline that will write its first Olympic page precisely in Bormio.
"We are approaching the appointment with great strides and we are all working hard, at every level, institutions, associations, operators and citizens, to prepare ourselves in the best possible way. Our thoughts go first and foremost to the works, but no less important is the reception system. People will come from all over the world and we want to offer the best of Bormio, in all respects,' says the mayor of Bormio, Silvia Cavazzi, while Samanta Antonioli, councillor for Sport, Tourism and the Olympics, highlights the strategic importance of the event: 'Our goal is to offer athletes the best conditions for competing and to guarantee citizens and tourists an unforgettable experience. The Olympics are an opportunity to relaunch the territory and strengthen the sense of community'.
