It starts with the classic automotive sector and congresses but, in the future, all opportunities to grow and promote Italian production chains abroad will be evaluated.

Fiera Milano and Italian Exhibition Group (trade fairs of Rimini and Vicenza) have entered into a strategic alliance that sees as its first act the acquisition from Andrea Martini's Mosaico Capital of 70% of Emac, a company specialised in the organisation of trade fair events for the classic automotive industry. Following the corporate reorganisation, the two exhibition groups each have 35% of the shares, while the remaining 30% remains with Andrea Martini.

Phase One: the synergy between events

.

The aim of the operation is the synergic and strategic management of the two sector events held by Emac: AutoClassica, held in Fiera Milano in the autumn (the 15th edition will be from 21 to 23 November), and Vicenza Classic Car Show, scheduled in the spring in the Veneto city (the third edition will be held from 28 to 30 March 2026).

But the Emac operation is only the first step of an alliance that aims to overcome the historical fragmentation of the Italian trade fair system, focusing on a vertical type of collaboration: 'The objective is not to integrate the governance of two different companies, which are each a great resource for their own territory, but to work in a joint and shared way on products,' explains Fiera Milano's CEO, Francesco Conci. 'By putting together the management of our best events, it is possible to assume an adequate and competitive dimension of our products on international markets, capable of competing with already consolidated events.

The operation has a strategic value that goes beyond the size of the two events involved in the first 'step', as IEG's CEO Corrado Peraboni explains: 'On international markets there is a great concentration of trade fair operators. It is clear that, in Italy, such concentrations are not possible, so the way to go to compete with foreign players is to create vertical alliances, on individual industries and tomorrow, why not, on individual markets".

Phase Two: Synergy on Conferences

.

The concept reiterated by both managers is that of creating synergies to develop, together, 'country system' projects. The second act, already announced, of this alliance, which will extend to the congress sector, also goes in this direction. "Through the joint international action of the respective congress centres, we will promote not our centres, but the destination Italy as a venue for major international events," adds Peraboni. In addition to the two main poles - Allianz MiCo (Milan) and Palacongressi in Rimini - the synergy between Fiera Milano and Ieg can also make available the Vicenza Convention Centre and the Palazzo dei Congressi in Fiuggi, managed by Ieg, and the MoMeC in Rome, owned by Fiera Milano.

The acquisition of Emac is, therefore, a sort of 'test-bed for new models of collaboration between Italian operators, capable of generating economies of scale, international attractiveness, and the development of vertical supply chains of excellence,' says Francesco Conci. 'The numbers prove it: according to the Icca 2024 ranking, Italy is first in Europe and second in the world with 635 international congresses hosted last year. Peraboni adds: 'If the opportunity arises, we will seize future possible country system operations as an important piece of our group's expansion strategy, alongside organic and external growth'.

The next stages of the alliance

.

The next step could be a joint action abroad. Indeed, both companies own operating platforms in key markets, which could in the future run events of both entities. 'The logic is that of a synergy aimed at development, the main objective of which is to work on the size of our products and make them attractive on a larger international scale,' explains Conci.

Returning to phase one of this alliance, the acquisition of Emac, the objective is an integrated management of the two shows: "Milano AutoClassica and Vicenza Classic Car Show are events with distinctive but complementary characteristics, each with its own strengths," commented Andrea Martini. Under a unified direction and with the support of two partners such as Fiera Milano and Ieg, they will be able to generate important synergies and open up new prospects for growth. Moreover, their location in two strategic moments of the year, autumn and spring, will allow them to cover the entire exhibition season, guaranteeing a constant presence on the market".
