A strong earthquake tremor (estimated magnitude 4.0) was felt in Naples at around 9.15 am. The tremor was felt in several districts of the city, mainly in the western area near the Campi Flegrei, but also in the city centre. The event was felt sharply in several neighbourhoods of Naples, including in the centre and on lower floors. The tremor is the strongest recorded in a seismic swarm that began at 8.51am. About ten tremors have been recorded so far.

The epicentre was located at the border between the municipalities of Naples and Pozzuoli. The quake occurred at a depth of approximately 2.5 km, in the sea in the stretch of water in front of Via Napoli, in Pozzuoli, a short distance from the border with the Neapolitan district of Bagnoli.

Edoardo Cosenza, Councillor for Infrastructure, Mobility and Civil Protection of the Municipality of Naples, reports that no damage has been reported in Naples, Cosenza explains that 'specific inspections of public buildings are continuing, but we do not expect anything serious'. The earthquake, he continues, occurred 'within a fault line at sea between Pozzuoli and Naples. As has already happened, this fault generates earthquakes that are felt very strongly in Naples'. The accelerations are 'half or slightly more than those of the 13 March earthquake. And therefore the same proportion of actions on buildings. Usual forms of the response spectrum, with amplifications only for small periods'.

The last major seismic event recorded in the Phlegraean Fields dates back to 30 June: it was an earthquake of magnitude 4.6, which occurred at 12.47 p.m., the same magnitude as the one recorded on the night of 13 March, the most violent in the last 40 years.

Flegrei Fields, at the Archaeological Park, sites temporarily closed

"As a result of the quake and the ongoing seismic swarm, in implementation of safety protocols, the Park sites are temporarily closed to the public. Updates for the reopening and scheduled events will follow'. This can be read on the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park's Facebook page.
