Superleague, Real Madrid seeks four billion in compensation from Uefa
The application comes in the aftermath of the ruling of the Madrid Provincial Court rejecting the appeal filed by the European federation
Real Madrid will ask Uefa for compensation of more than EUR 4 billion for alleged losses suffered after the European football governing body blocked the controversial Superleague project. According to documents produced by experts hired by the Merengues, the Spanish football club believes it has lost revenue of between EUR 4.5 billion and EUR 4.7 billion since Uefa vetoed the European Super League project in 2021.
All this after the Provincial Court of Madrid dismissed the appeals lodged by the European football body against a ruling affirming Uefa's violation of EU competition law. The Madrid judge also dismissed the appeals lodged by the Spanish League and the Spanish Football Federation.
In December 2023, the Court of Justice of the EU had ruled that the rules in force in 2021 used by football's governing bodies Uefa and Fifa to block the Super League were contrary to European Union law and constituted an abuse of a dominant market position. Real Madrid said in a statement that it was "delighted" with the ruling, adding that it "opens the way to claiming compensation for the substantial damages suffered by the club".
The verdict comes four and a half years after the failure of the Superleague project, launched by 12 clubs in Spain, Italy and England and lasted only 48 hours due to the fierce reactions of fans and, above all, lawmakers. Uefa, however, states that the latest ruling "does not validate the abandoned 'superleague' project announced in 2021".
