Art in the Swatch: more a canvas for creativity than a collector's asset
Everyone is queuing up for Royal Pop: the bioceramic pocket watch. Quotations rarely exceed 250-500 euros
It was last week that the news of the crush (or brawl?) in Milan's Piazza Gae Aulenti among those queuing to get a Royal Pop, the bioceramic pocket watch born of the collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch, in homage to the iconic Royal Oak, launched by AP in 1972, and the Swatch Pops of the 1980s.
The juxtaposition - inspired by the light-hearted tones of Pop Art - could (and did) raise eyebrows among purists.
But that between Swatch and the art world is a much deeper bond, studded with names such asKeith Haring, Sam Francis, Valerio Adami, Mimmo Rotella, Kiki Picasso (but the list is very long, with the presence of 'unsuspected', for example Renzo Piano).
These are all limited productions, which can no longer be purchased on the primary market but only on resale platforms and even occasionally at auction.
All crazy for iconic timepieces
"Swatches, even the rarest and most prestigious artistic collaborations, are not expensive watches, they are not comparable to the timepieces of the big luxury brands.
