Prepare to enter an enchanted, seductive world made entirely of sugar. With her new immersive installation 'Sweet Memories', Dutch artist Simone Post recreates her childhood home using sweets of all kinds: meringues, candies, candy chains.

From sewing to confectionery

The work is on display until 31 August at the Voorlinden Museum and transports visitors into a childhood dream where everything still seems possible. The artist drew inspiration from her own childhood: her mother taught sewing and showed her that you could create anything with fabric. Today Post carries on that experimental spirit and applies it to unusual materials: sweets. In her installation, she weaves long strands of candy to create furniture, builds a kitchen made of marshmallows and runs sewing machines made of candy. "I recreated the house I lived in when I was three years old," says Simone. "For me, that is the perfect age: you feel free, safe, without shame, and the world is still a great mystery to be discovered.

A return to childhood

.

With 'Sweet Memories', Post invites you to rediscover the charm of that magical age when everything is still malleable. Every detail is carefully designed: from the bunk bed to the washing machine, from the soft toys to the chandelier, everything is faithfully reproduced with sweet materials. The sugary scents, pastel colours and soft textures evoke a sense of security, creating a warm and dreamy atmosphere. Beneath the playful, enchanted surface, the work also sends a critical message. The abundant sweetness, made up of over 700 kg of candy, evokes both desire and excess. What looks inviting on the surface can become suffocating. With subtle irony, the installation reflects on the limits of abundance and the human need for 'more and more'.

All the objects: furniture, picture frames, an entire trunk full of soft toys, even the books, are all exact replicas made of sweets and produced by twenty people who worked two months to create the work. Everything is inspired by the artist's childhood home and for this reason, and to favour total immersion of the visitor, the hum of sewing machines and the music box of a music box have been chosen as background sounds.
