2 June is Republic Day, an anniversary celebrated on the day when, in 1946, the referendum was held to determine the form of government following the end of World War II. A referendum that sanctioned the country's republican order. A political consultation in which, for the first time in Italy, women also participated. Nearly 25 million citizens went to the polls - exactly 24,946,878 - about 13 million women and 12 million men, or a total of 89.08% of the then 28,005,449 eligible voters. The results were proclaimed by the Court of Cassation on 10 June 1946: there were 23,437,143 valid votes, of which 12,718,641 (equal to 54.27%) were cast in favour of the Republic, 10,718,502 (equal to 45.73%) in favour of the Monarchy.
Survey: 88% would vote Republic today
Now Swg, in a poll conducted from 28 to 30 May - survey method Cavi, on a nationally representative sample of 800 adults - asked people to imagine voting today in the 1946 referendum. Today, 88% would choose the Republic and only 12% the monarchy. A percentage that rises to 94% for the over 64s and reaches 97% among the 'self-located left'. Only 12% of the surveyed sample would choose the monarchy, a percentage that rises to 20% among those 'self-located to the right'.
For 82% it is the holiday of all Italians
.And, again, to the question 'In your opinion, Republic Day is ...', for 82 per cent it is a holiday for all Italians, while it is only a holiday for one political party for 11 per cent. To the question answered 'I don't know' by 7 per cent.

Founding values of the Constitution not yet fully achieved
The results on the achievement of the Constitution's founding values give pause for thought: for the majority of citizens who took part in the survey, the Constitution's founding values have not yet been fully achieved. With regard to Article 1 of the Constitution (Italy is a democratic republic, founded on work), 43% believe it is a value that is close but not yet fully achieved, 30% believe it is a value that has been consolidated, while 27% believe it is a value that is still far from being achieved. With regard to Article 2 of the Constitution (Sovereignty belongs to the people, which exercises it in the forms and within the limits of the Constitution), 43% believe it is a value that is close to, but not fully reached, 24% believe it is a value that is now consolidated, while 33% believe it is a value that is still far from being reached.
