Switzerland, train derailed in Valais. Five injured, no Italians
Rescue in progress, 80 passengers on board
A train derailed this morning near the Valais hamlet of Goppenstein. The train accident occurred around 7 a.m.
There were 29 people on board the train, all evacuated. Five were injured, no Italians. One of the injured was transported to the hospital in Sion, while the other four were cared for on the spot.
The website of the Swiss Railways Sbb states that rail traffic is interrupted between Goppenstein and Brig (on the Frutigen - Brig line) and that the cause is an avalanche. The interruption of the Frutigen - Brig line will last until at least 4 p.m. today.
The police announced that they will hold a press conference to provide further details
The BLS, the owner of the train, says the exact location of the accident is the Stockgraben tunnel between Goppenstein and Hohtenn. The train involved is the RegioExpress that left Spiez at 6.12 a.m. Goppenstein is located at the southern portal of the Lötschberg tunnel.
