Fuel prices, Tajani: ‘Measures are being considered to ease the burden on those most in need’. All the options
“We are looking into a range of measures to ease the burden placed particularly on those who are struggling the most. Unfortunately, what is happening is beyond our control. This is a truly complicated situation; we hope the war will end and the problems in Hormuz will be resolved, because that is the crux of the matter.” So said the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, on the sidelines of the Forza Italia youth festival in Montesilvano, regarding the possibility of a one-off €100 fuel voucher reportedly being considered by the government. Tajani also pointed out that “we have enabled the regions to extract more oil and gas in order to make better use of our resources. That is what can be done. Of course, a single energy market in Europe would be helpful, and this would bring prices down in the future too,” he concluded.
Until 17 September
The current discount on diesel excise duty expires on Thursday 17 September 2026. The Government has recently approved a one-week extension, which keeps a temporary reduction of 17 euro cents per litre in force. After this date, the generalised discounts at the pump are set to end definitively, to make way for a new decree that will introduce more targeted support for low-income households and certain professional groups.
The hypotheses under consideration
To tackle high fuel prices, three options are currently being considered. The return of “petrol vouchers”: the reintroduction of tax-free fuel vouchers (fringe benefits) for employees, which are fully tax-deductible for companies. The extension of this measure to the self-employed and VAT-registered individuals is also under consideration. Enhancement of the ‘Dedicata a te’ card: The provision of a one-off payment (estimated at between 80 and 100 euros) to be credited directly to the social card, intended for around 1.2 million Italian households with an ISEE of up to 15,000 euros. Specific support for productive sectors: The replacement or updating of the current tax credit for professional categories with high fuel consumption, such as logistics, road haulage, taxi drivers, agriculture and fisheries
