Fuels: Tajani says no to taxes on windfall profits, but in favour of an agreed contribution
‘Descalzi is not opposed to finding solutions’
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - “Taxation is a mantra of the left; I am in favour of dialogue. Agreements can be reached with the oil companies.” This was stated by the Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, on RTL 102.5, in response to a question about the PD’s proposal to tax windfall profits in the energy sector to counter rising prices. For Tajani, however, “speculation must be penalised”, whilst intervention on windfall profits risks being “a sort of wealth tax against the market”. Speaking about Eni, the minister said that the chief executive “Descalzi is certainly not someone opposed to finding solutions. There is no anti-Italian stance on his part, quite the contrary: Eni is a fundamental instrument of our foreign and economic policy. It is right that everyone should make a contribution, but it is the way in which that contribution is sought that makes the difference’, he explained. ‘We reached a solution with the banks and insurance companies after lengthy negotiations, and this made a positive contribution to the budget. We can engage in dialogue with the oil companies and reach agreements that enable these firms to support our economy.’
