The Naples ring road is among the busiest routes in Italy with average daily flows of around 113,000 vehicles, more than double the average volume of the network managed by Autostrade per l'Italia, with peaks of up to 138,000 vehicles per day. The figure was brought to attention at a meeting held on 15 February in Naples, at the Federico II University conference centre, attended by, among others, the CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, Roberto Tomasi, and the mayor of Naples and the metropolitan city, Gaetano Manfredi.
According to the route manager, the Tangenziale di Napoli represents a veritable laboratory for the grounding of solutions designed with sustainable mobility in mind. The infrastructure was built in the 1970s and with its 20.2 kilometres is among the most travelled daily in Italy. On this stretch Aspi is carrying out, in addition to numerous modernisation works on viaducts, tunnels and safety barriers, a series of technological innovation projects ranging from sophisticated infrastructure monitoring systems to various technologies to enhance safety, driving comfort and sustainability.
"We consider this territory to be a workshop of innovation," Tomasi pointed out. "From the Autostrada del Sole to the Tangenziale, one of the busiest stretches in Italy, Campania is confirmed as one of the main testing grounds for groundbreaking solutions and a modernisation plan that is in full implementation. "The Bypass is a very important infrastructure for the city," said Manfredi, "it represents an essential connecting element with respect to mobility in a large metropolitan area like ours. It is clear that we need to make further upgrades. There is an agreement to work on the existing network, to improve the environmental impact, to introduce alternative refuelling systems for cars, to reduce noise, to increase safety'.
