Cinema tax credit, cards acquired for three films: Drought, Dawn at Last and Immensity
The Guardia di Finanza of the Nucleo di polizia economico-finanziaria of the Capital acquired documents from the administrative offices of Cinecittà
The investigation by the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office on cinema tax credit is widening. The Guardia di Finanza of the Capital's Economic-Financial Police Nucleus acquired from the administrative offices of Cinecittà all the papers related to three films: 'Siccità' of 2022 directed by Paolo Virzì; 'Finally Dawn' of 2023 directed by Saverio Costanzo, Maurizio Costanzo's son; 'Immensity' of 2022 directed by Emauele Crialese.
The aim of the investigation is to ascertain how public money intended to support the Italian film industry was spent. One hundred films are in the crosshairs, which, according to preliminary findings, had a box office return close to zero.
The case is one of five files that the prosecutors in Rome are working on.
For the time being, there are no suspects, but the investigation is underway and is running on several tracks: economic-financial profiles and possible offences in the public administration. From Piazzale Clodio come cautious definitions - 'embryonic' proceedings - which, however, do not dampen the weight of the affair. Because the numbers of possible frauds are impressive and the subjects involved directly or indirectly are prominent.
On the economic level, at the end of July the Directorate General of the Ministry of Culture was working on a package of 200 works produced between 2020 and 2024, with a total value close to €350 million. An impressive census, which testifies to the size of the public expenditure at stake.
