Valditara: “Technical colleges will become sixth-form colleges; the decree will be issued shortly”

In the coming weeks, legislative measures will be introduced to transform technical and vocational schools into licei, whilst changing their name. This was explained by the Minister for Education and Merit, Giuseppe Valditara, who announced that this proposal will be “included in a forthcoming decree-law”.
“I firmly believe,” he clarified in an interview with the Skuola.net website, “that the constitutional school system, which treats all pupils as equals, can no longer distinguish between the liceo and the technical or vocational school. They will all be called ‘licei’, not because they provide the same type of education, but because they all have equal standing”.

As for the curricula, as set out in the National Guidelines, “first and foremost, we are placing importance and centrality on the serious study of Italian, emphasising grammar and syntax”. The aim will also be to promote traditional humanities, in a school “that revalues paper, books and pens, because we must revalue human intelligence in the age of Artificial Intelligence”, explains the minister. An AI which, in the minister’s plans, must be introduced into the school environment with due awareness. The Ministry has therefore allocated approximately 200 million euros, with a view to introducing the basic concepts of algorithms as early as primary school.
