Ten new trains on the Vesuvian Lines will ensure services every 30 minutes
The Campania Region is aiming to revitalise a railway line that has been in gradual decline for years
Ten new trains have been delivered and a new timetable has been finalised for the Vesuvian Lines, better known as the Circumvesuviana. These railway lines are operated by Eav, a subsidiary of the Campania Region, and have for many years now been a symbol of inefficiency and poor service, despite serving a very large catchment area. Pietro Diamantini was appointed a few weeks ago as the sole director of Eav.
In short, following the recent change in management, the arrival of the new trains (out of the 56 ordered) and the new timetable are seen as a sign of the commitment to revitalise and upgrade the infrastructure and service, which have long been in a state of disrepair. There will be more services than in the past, with greater regularity and a 30-minute frequency, an improvement on the previous system, which ran at 36-minute intervals. Thanks to this reorganisation, the service will become more regular and user-friendly, with consistent timings that are easy to remember throughout the day. The overall service offering increases to 280 daily journeys, providing a total of 39,872 seats, 171,988 total seats offered per day and over 9,300 kilometres travelled daily across the Vesuvian network.
“Today we are taking an important step towards making tangible improvements to public transport on the Vesuvian Lines,” says Roberto Fico, President of the Campania Region. “Ten new trains are coming into service and, from 17 October, we will have a new timetable that is simpler and more regular. We know there is still a lot of work to be done, but the direction is clear: to offer citizens a reliable and efficient public transport system that meets their needs.”
Mario Casillo, Vice-President and Councillor for Transport for the Campania Region, speaks of the ‘56 additional journeys compared to 2025’. ‘Our vision for transport is clear: a more reliable service, with more journeys and shorter waiting times. The new timetable, with a 30-minute frequency and 280 daily journeys, moves in this direction: a system tailored to the needs of commuters, students, workers and tourists.’ Casillo also announced greater integration between trains and buses. In fact, bus services are being enhanced with an increase in the number of journeys on the Meta-Massalubrense and Vico Equense circular routes.
Pietro Diamantini explains: “We want to gradually change the way the company views its services, making them increasingly tailored to the needs of our customers who travel by train. The customer must once again be at the heart of our decisions. This means listening to the needs of those who use the train to get to work, to university, to school, to a hospital or to an appointment. It also means thinking about the tourists who choose to visit our region and who need a transport system that is simple, straightforward and reliable”.
