Never in the Open era had Italy managed to place players simultaneously in the two singles draw at the Internationals. The last time was 58 years ago when Nicola Pietrangeli and Lea Pericoli managed it in the 1967 edition.

The former non-playing captain of the 1976 Davis Cup-winning Italy lost in the semifinals to Tony Roche 7-5 6-3 8-6, Pericoli, who passed away in October 2024, on the other hand suffered a heavy 6-2 6-2 defeat by the legendary Brazilian Maria Ester Bueno.

To find another edition with Italians so far ahead in the draw in both the men's and women's events, we have to go back another 10 years and reach 1957 with Nicola Pietrangeli, Beppe Merlo and Silvana Lazzarino.

In the men's semi-finals Pietrangeli overcame Pierre Darmon 6-4 11-9 6-3 and Merlo beat Mervyn Rose 1-6 7-5 6-4. The two then met in the final and Nicola won his first title at the Internationals by beating Merlo 8-6 6-2 6-4.

In the women's, Lazzarino lost in the semifinals to the US player Dorothy Head Knode 5-7 6-1 6-2. Yesterday's record of the Italians at the Foro Italicone in their respective draw could be improved should Jannik Sinner win this evening against Norwegian Casper Ruud, opening the door to the semifinals for the world number one.
