Raffaele Fiore, a former member of the Red Brigades involved in the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, has died. He was 71 years old. News of his death, which occurred yesterday, was given by lawyer Davide Steccanella, legal counsel of another former Red Brigade member, Lauro Azzolini. Born in Bari on 7 May 1954, Fiore had been arrested in Turin in 1979 and sentenced to life imprisonment in the 'Moro Uno' trial. He had been on parole since 1997, working in a cooperative, a measure confirmed ten years later. He had never repented or disassociated himself.
Fiore - the Ansa recalls - had directed the Turin column of the Red Brigades and participated in the Via Fani ambush on 16 March 1978, during which the five men of DC president Aldo Moro's escort were killed. According to reconstructions, he was one of the four brigatists disguised as airmen who opened fire. His machine gun jammed, preventing him from hitting the car in which Moro and his escort were travelling. According to LaPresse, it was he, together with Mario Moretti, who extracted Aldo Moro from the car and transferred him to the blue Fiat 132 ready for escape.
