The A22 is stepping up its efficiency drive: the third-lane project
Objective: to upgrade the infrastructure to cope with increasing traffic and improve service levels, safety standards and environmental standards
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor)- To upgrade the infrastructure to cope with growing traffic volumes. And, at the same time, to improve service levels and safety and environmental standards by reducing congestion, with virtually no further land taken up. These are the main objectives behind the construction of the third carriageway on the A22 motorway.
This is a major project, not only for users but also for the regions through which the motorway infrastructure passes. The project, drawn up by Autostrada del Brennero Spa, forms part of a wider investment plan totalling over nine billion euros; a significant portion of this is earmarked for two major traffic management projects: the construction of the third carriageway between Verona and the junction with the A1 (1.1 billion) and the construction of the dynamic carriageway between Bolzano and Verona (9 lots totalling 2.2 billion), which can be activated during periods of particularly heavy traffic.
Two projects that will transform the A22 into a three-lane motorway (fixed or dynamic) along the entire flat section. Traffic flows along the A22, particularly on the section between Bolzano and Verona, show a steady upward trend. Reflecting the economic, commercial and tourist importance of the Brenner corridor, these flows become particularly heavy at certain times of the year, such as summer weekends or during public holidays.
