The Bayesian, the boat that sank off Porticello in the Palermo area flying the UK flag, is a 56-metre luxury sailing yacht with a gross tonnage of 473 tonnes. Built by the Perini navi Viareggio shipyard in February 2008 and refurbished four years ago, the vessel is designed for exclusive cruises. In 2009 it had received the Superyatch award as the best sailing yacht. The Bayesian also boasted another record, that of the yacht's main mast, made of aluminium and 75 metres high, the second largest in the world. The boat's teak deck area is 436 square metres and the six cabins occupy a further 143 square metres. On board, according to the builder, the owner and 11 guests as well as 10 crew members can be accommodated.
The yacht built by the Viareggio shipyard is constructed with an aluminium hull and superstructure. The interior was designed by Rémi Tessier, a French designer working in the luxury sector, especially in the world of furnishing private planes and yachts, who had already collaborated with the Perini Navi shipyard in the past. According to some British websites, the Bayesian is owned by 'Revtom Ltd', a company based on the Isle of Man that would be headed by Angela Bacares, wife of the British tycoon Mike Lynch, who is among those missing from the shipwreck. She is among the 15 people rescued after the boat sank. The management of the yacht would also be entrusted to the broker 'Camper and Nicholsons'; the rental, according to the same sources, would be around 195 thousand euros per week, about 215 thousand dollars.
