You can walk into any supermarket and buy a banana for less than one euro, but a banana stuck to the wall? It could sell for more than $1 million at the next Sotheby's auction in New York.
"Comedian", Maurizio Cattelan's yellow banana taped to a wall, is expected to sell for between $1 million and $1.5 million at an auction on 20 November at Sotheby's in New York.
It debuted at the Art Basel fair in Miami Beach in 2019: naturally, those bidding will not buy the same fruit that was on display in Miami. The crowd looking for selfies became so thick that 'Comedian' was withdrawn from the exhibition, but three editions sold for between $120,000 and $150,000, according to Perrotin Gallery.
Sotheby's states that the fruit was always intended to be replaced regularly.
