EU: Cimbri says the project is stalled at the euro; a single capital market is needed
If it is a fragile issue, polarisation and tensions will grow
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - The process of European integration came to a halt with the euro, whilst the Union has turned into a ‘rule-making machine’: we need to build a ‘single capital market’ to ‘allocate funds where they are needed and make the investments’ that we must make. This was stated by Unipol’s chairman, Carlo Cimbri, in his speech at the ‘Welfare, Italia’ conference organised by Unipol and the TEHA Group. If Europe is to remain “a fragile entity”, “polarisation will grow” within it, along with the resulting social tensions. Commenting on the current tensions in Europe – both social and political – between countries, Cimbri said: “It is undoubtedly a regression that has its roots in the culpable and enormous delay and short-sightedness that we Europeans have displayed over the last 20–30 years, ever since the process of European integration began to slow down until it almost came to a standstill.”
