The decree enters into force, the lifelong identity card for the over-70s starts. Here are the stages
The objective," reads the explanatory report passed by the Council of Ministers for approval, "is to simplify obligations for the elderly, reduce inconveniences and administrative burdens, and lighten the work of municipalities, in line with the principles of simplification and proportionality"
The 'life-long' electronic identity card for the over-70s comes into force. The measure, included by the government in the Pnrr decree law, has been published in the Official Gazette, although it will still have to pass through Parliament for conversion into law.
The novelty for the elderly population is included in Chapter 6, under 'simplification measures in favour of citizens and consumers'. Where it is explained in detail what will change and, above all, from when.
The date
Let us start with the date. The second paragraph, the one devoted precisely to the novelty for the over-70s, explains that it will concern every card 'issued as from 30 July 2026'. The card is also 'usable for expatriation purposes'.
Unlimited duration (not a 50-year renewal)
The final version of the intervention provides that the renewal, for the over-70s, will be of 'unlimited duration'.
The person concerned may still request renewal after 10 years if he or she wants to update the digital authentication certificate.
