EU: Accession talks for Ukraine and Moldova to begin on Monday
The announcement was made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa
The European Union has announced that it will resume formal accession negotiations with Ukraine on Monday 15 June. This process has been restarted following the lifting of Hungary’s veto, and Moldova is also set to join the talks.
“All Member States have agreed to launch the first round of accession negotiations – the so-called first cluster – with Ukraine and Moldova. During the first intergovernmental conference on Monday, we will launch the cluster dedicated to fundamental issues, which forms the backbone of the accession process.”
The announcement was made by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council Antonio Costa . “This is a recognition of the determination, courage and commitment shown by both countries in pushing ahead with reforms, despite the enormous challenges,” they emphasise.
The decision holds particular symbolic significance for Ukraine, which has been embroiled in a conflict with Russia for over four years.
