Chiharu Shiota's evanescent cloud at Mudec

The snow and its melting inspired her..

"White snow is very beautiful, but it is also very impermanent, it does not last, it transforms, it becomes water and water enters the earth. The snow does not remain, just as the people who are represented in the work are people who are no longer there, but are connected by threads, just as the snow transforms, but then remains in the form of water, so too these people who are no longer there, remain alive within us and these letters testify to that".

Particularly evocative, not only because of its large size, this installation, capable of traversing space to become an evanescent cloud, symbolises the distance that is created in time between people and how time itself, however, also operates positively on this type of transformation. Because, as the artist explains, "the sense of existence in absence, where the memory of people is still vivid, but the moment of the last meeting has vanished like the snow of winter past."
