A technology that makes it possible to build works and infrastructures without having to excavate large areas under the open sky: these are the microtunnels, in which the Friuli-based Icop, based in Basiliano (UD) , specialises. In environmentally sensitive areas, in the sea or in densely urbanised areas, this underground engineering is the key to realising projects that the company defines as tailor-made: 'The technical department, the study and definition phases are fundamental, as is the ability to manage complexity also in the financial structuring,' explains Giacomo Petrucco, director with responsibility for relations with intermediaries and investors. The numbers prove this strategy right.

Growing results

.

The company is 80.3% controlled by the Petrucco family, with a small stake (2.8%) being held by the regional company Friulia. Since last 25 July, it has landed on the list dedicated to SMEs.

The first six months of 2024 - the figures were released at the beginning of October - were characterised by strong growth in terms of volumes, margins and profitability. The net profit indicator shows +415% to EUR 7.3 million and the value of production increased by more than +58% to EUR 78.6 million, as expected. The company confirms its growth expectations for volumes and Ebitda, and a further strengthening in the coming years thanks to an order backlog of around EUR 900 million (up from EUR 785 million as at 30 June 2023).

Overall, specialised underground activities account for more than 85% of the value of production. As a market, Italy prevails, but it is also worth mentioning the good performance of orders in France, in particular in the construction sites for the Toulouse metro and Line 18 in the Gran Paris Express project. In this context, 'the listing represents an important accelerator to consolidate our competitive advantage and will allow us to seize possible new growth opportunities for external lines to make a further dimensional leap,' said CEO Piero Petrucco. On the day of the listing of the ordinary shares on the Euronext Growth Milan market, subscriptions exceeded the offer, with a large participation of Italian and international institutional investors, representing about 50% of the total demand. The total value of the transaction, entirely a capital increase, is just over EUR 30 million.

Icop's past achievements include road works, in particular bridges (in the reconstruction of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, it was responsible for the construction of foundations in the eastern half, from pier 10 to 18), viaducts and subways, and infrastructure constructions also in the open sea.

Another construction site that remains in Italy's recent history is the one in Melendugno (Lecce): here, under the beach of San Basilio (San Foca), construction work was carried out on the microtunnel of the TAP gas pipeline, which transports natural gas from Arzerbaigian to Italy via Greece and Albania. The tunnel stretches 1,540 metres, passing under the beach, and was excavated using a 26-metre-long mechanical mole. Thanks to the use of this environmentally friendly technology, the work did not affect the landscape or the tourist and economic activities in the area.

Abroad, Icop has worked on the construction of part of the sewer system for centralised sewage collection in Sungai Langat, Kajang, Malaysia, and then in Spain , El Salvador, Mexico, Malaysia , Singapore, France, Germany, Denmark, Bahrain and Portugal. In Italy it also operates as a specialist in a number of construction sites with the Eteria consortium, of which it is a minority partner. In Trieste, the focus is on port expansion works (Pier VI, VII, conversion of the former Servola ironworks area, electrification of the quays). This is a crucial work: when fully operational, Pier 8 will triple the port's existing capacity, and about 900 million is the total investment in the area in various phases up to 2040.

In recent weeks, the company has been awarded three national infrastructure projects with a total value of over 20 million for which microtunnelling technology will be used.

In Rimini, Icop was contracted to build the sewer as part of a hydraulic risk mitigation project. The intervention aims to reduce the risk of flooding by diverting rainwater upstream of the city centre towards a canal, in order to lighten the load on the urban sewer network. The use of microtunnelling will minimise the social and environmental impact of the work in a densely populated area. The project will last approximately one and a half years.

In addition, Icop will participate in the construction of a lot of the Recanati-Foligno methane pipeline, which crosses the province of Macerata: in a hilly and mountainous area of the Apennines, six crossings by microtunnelling are planned, including a section over 1 km long. This intervention will be essential to strengthen the gas transport network, with an expected duration of about 1.5 years. Finally, as part of the works at the Catania junction, where Icop is already involved in the foundation works for the modification of the railway infrastructure to allow for the extension of the runway at Fontanarossa airport, microtunnelling will be used for the underground laying of a pipeline without interfering with the railway line.

The social role

.

Icop has become - among the first in its sector - a benefit company, with the aim of pursuing positive results for society and the environment in addition to corporate profit. In addition to the attention to the environment, testified by the adoption of innovative and environmentally friendly technologies since the 1980s, the latest impact report indicates, on the social sustainability front, over a decade of experience in international cooperation, with the management of an arts and crafts school in South Sudan. In Italy, the focus is on welfare for employees and families, in order to support a better reconciliation between work and family life. Significant collaborations have been initiated with the third sector: among them, the shelter project for families fleeing the war in Ukraine.
