The Genoa sub-port tunnel will have an intermediate exit in the centre
The municipality accepts the option of an underground road outlet in the Mother of God area but warns: 'The citizens will decide on the causeway'
The city council has officially confirmed its request to maintain Genoa's sub-port tunnel project "in its original configuration, i.e. with the construction of the intermediate exit for the city centre, through the Via delle Casaccie and Via Madre di Dio ramps, without any a priori demolition plans for the Soprelevata (i.e. the Aldo Moro road, which crosses the Ligurian capital from Sampieradrena to Foce, ed. The announcement comes at the end of a meeting attended by, among others, the president of the Liguria Region and commissioner for reconstruction, Marco Bucci, the mayor, Sivia Salis, the deputy mayor of Genoa, Alessandro Terrile, the municipal councillor for infrastructures, Massimo Ferrante, and the managing director of Autostrade per l'Italia, Arrigo Giana.
"The fate of the Soprelevata," the municipal representatives write in a note, "will be decided exclusively through a participatory process with the citizens. This discussion will be initiated only after the sub-port tunnel has been put into operation in its entirety, when it will be possible to analyse with reliable data the new traffic flows and the impact of the work on city traffic".
During the meeting, the note continues, 'the issue of the funds needed to complete inspections and monitoring of bridges and decks, as required by current national regulations, was addressed. The objective is to ensure maximum safety and to plan any necessary restoration work. Those present agreed to the municipality's proposal to find part of the necessary resources from the compensation agreement for the city signed following the collapse of the Morandi bridge. To formalise this step, a special technical addendum to the existing agreement will be drawn up in the coming days'.
The commissioning body, for its part, specifies that the discussion "allowed for the clarification of the main issues that emerged in the public debate: site and road management plans were illustrated," and the overall balance of the work shows: "more than 30,000 vehicles per day removed from the urban surface road network; a significant reduction in city-port crossing times (up to 30-40%); reduction of emissions and improvement of air quality in the most congested areas.
It was also confirmed, the commissioning body states, 'that the interventions were planned in full compliance with environmental and landscape prescriptions, with the involvement of the competent bodies, including the Superintendency, and with compensatory measures already defined and approved aimed at enhancing urban greenery, with particular reference to the area of the new Foce park and the monumental greenery system of viale delle Brigate Partigiane'.
