The confirmation of the Italian organisation of the Atp Finals until 2030 is getting closer and closer. The competition from the Saudis, who have obtained the Wta Finals underway until 2026 in Riyhad with a record prize money of 14 million, the Next Gen played so far in Milan scheduled from 18 to 22 December in Jeddah, as well as creating the multi-million 'Six Kings Slam', should have been overcome. The agreement being finalised that Fitp president Angelo Binaghi has been working on for some time, with the support of the government, should provide for a relay between Turin and Milan after 2025, after the last edition of the current contract. The formula is still being discussed.
The new Santa Giulia arena in Milan
It could in fact be played one or two more years in Turin and then move to Milan until 2030. In any case after the 2026 Games, when the 'home' of the challenges between the eight Masters of world tennis could become the new Santa Giulia arena, destined to host the ice hockey competitions during the next Winter Olympics. The move would thus make it possible to have 16 thousand seats instead of the 12 thousand of the Inalpi Arena, as well as to activate all the fashion and lifestyle circuits of the Lombard capital.
For the renewal of the agreement, Atp asked for a higher fee. It should rise from $18 million to around $30 million. The total prize money already increased from $15 million to $15.25 million (the winner of the tournament will pocket $4.8 million if he remains undefeated in all five matches) is also expected to increase substantially and exceed $25 million.
In order to sign the contract, there are still a few technical and formal steps to be taken and, above all, for the government to put on paper the necessary financial guarantees, which for the last five-year period were around 80 million. In the five-year period from 2026 to 2030, this should amount to just under 20 million per year. A well remunerated investment, rather than a cost.
The government, as Binaghi has explained several times, 'puts in 16.2 million euros and takes back four times as much,' explains Fitp's number one. 'Basically, every public euro invested turns into 80 euros that fall on the territory. The 2023 edition produced 306.3 million in economic impact thanks to hotel bookings, catering, transport (higher even than that generated by the last Sanremo Festival), with 65.7 million in fiscal impact and 1950 full-time jobs created for a year. And to think that when Turin won the ATP Finals, Ernst&Young hypothesised an overall contribution to the national GDP of around 600 million in five years.
