The bear Kj1 has been killed. This was announced by the Province of Trento in a note. "This morning," it reads, "the decree signed yesterday by the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti, which envisaged the removal of the bear Kj1 by means of a cull, was implemented. A team of the Trentino Forestry Corps therefore went into action in the woods above Padaro di Arco, where the animal had been located through its radio collar.

Kj1,' the Province recalls, 'was a dangerous specimen, according to the Pacobace scale. This was also attested by Ispra, confirming the need to remove the bear (classified as 'high risk') as soon as possible. The animal has been responsible for at least seven interactions with humans. The last one was on 16 July, against a hiker.

Pichetto: 'Suppression is no solution'

''The killing of individual bears is not the solution to the problem''. This was stated by Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin after the killing of bear KJ1 in Trentino-Alto Adige this morning.

The minister warns that he has already discussed the matter with the regional governor Maurizio Fugatti. He also points out how ''the mistake'' was made in the past, namely when years ago the image of the bear was exploited by tourism in the region.

For Pichetto, the way forward is sterilisation, which,' he reveals, 'we are working on together with the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra). To this must then be added correct information for citizens.

Aidaa denounces Fugatti for 'animal murder'

"After the killing of the bear KJ1 in execution of the order signed in the night by the president of Trentino Maurizio Fugatti, the Italian Association for the Defence of Animals and the Environment has sent a complaint to the public prosecutor's office in Trento against the president of the autonomous province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti for the crime of killing an animal and in particular for the crime of bear murder in violation of law 157 article 30 (protection of wild fauna and article 544 ter of the penal code cruel and unnecessary killing of animals. This is what is stated in a note.

Enpa: 'We will denounce Fugatti to the EU'

.

Enpa will lodge a complaint with the European Union against the Province of Trento for the killing of the bear KJ1, responsible for the aggression on 16 July of a French tourist above the village of Dro.

"Once again, President Fugatti, contemptuous of every rule, of respect for Italian citizens and also of all those Trentino citizens who mobilised to save the bear, has condemned to death and killed the bear KJ1,' reads a note. He did it overnight, almost secretly, issuing the decree authorising the killing of KJ1 without giving time to the Regional Administrative Tribunal, the courts and even less to the associations to examine the scientific documents and the reasons for this absurd decision. It did so without first taking any measures, such as evaluating a translocation of the bear, or implementing preventive measures.

According to Enpa, 'this contemptuous attitude, which denotes a real ursicidal obsession of the President of the Province, will also have consequences in Europe. We will continue to report and denounce these senseless, unmotivated killings to the EU, pointing out how they were carried out without first having put in place any preventive measures or evaluated the many alternatives to killing as the much-vaunted Pacobace would instead require'.

Enpa emphasises that 'the killing of KJ1 is a loss for all of us because, let us remember, bears are particularly protected animals and unavailable state property. It is a disgrace to Italian citizens and to nature itself, and those responsible are there for all to see, including the now shamefully absent Minister for the Environment, who never makes himself heard, and the government, which is complicit thanks to the fawning policies of the Lega and Fratelli d'Italia'.
