The bear Kj1 has been killed. This was announced by the Province of Trento in a note. "This morning," it reads, "the decree signed yesterday by the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti, which envisaged the removal of the bear Kj1 by means of a cull, was implemented. A team of the Trentino Forestry Corps therefore went into action in the woods above Padaro di Arco, where the animal had been located through its radio collar.
Kj1,' the Province recalls, 'was a dangerous specimen, according to the Pacobace scale. This was also attested by Ispra, confirming the need to remove the bear (classified as 'high risk') as soon as possible. The animal has been responsible for at least seven interactions with humans. The last one was on 16 July, against a hiker.
Pichetto: 'Suppression is no solution'
''The killing of individual bears is not the solution to the problem''. This was stated by Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin after the killing of bear KJ1 in Trentino-Alto Adige this morning.
The minister warns that he has already discussed the matter with the regional governor Maurizio Fugatti. He also points out how ''the mistake'' was made in the past, namely when years ago the image of the bear was exploited by tourism in the region.
For Pichetto, the way forward is sterilisation, which,' he reveals, 'we are working on together with the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra). To this must then be added correct information for citizens.
