The League: no more 'mayoress' and 'lawyer' in public acts. The PD: proposal by troglodytes

Clash over the Carroccio's draft PDL to ban the use of the feminine in public acts. "It preserves the integrity of the Italian language". "No. It is discriminatory, read the Treccani".

No more 'lawyer' and also 'mayor'. A Lega Lega bill aims to ban the feminine gender in public acts for neologisms applied to state institutional titles, military ranks, professional titles, honours, and positions identified by acts having the force of law.

The Bill

The text, signed by the Leghist senator Manfredi Potenti, is still a draft to be submitted for drafting but is already very clear in its introduction: 'This law intends to preserve the integrity of the Italian language and, in particular, to avoid the improper modification of public titles, such as Mayor, Prefect, Quaestor, Lawyer, from symbolic attempts to adapt their definition to the different sensitivities of the times'. "It is necessary to prevent that the legitimate battle for gender equality, in order to achieve visibility and consensus in society, resorts to these excesses that are disrespectful to institutions," it explains. And, for this, it is deemed "necessary to intervene in legislation".

Stop using the feminine for institutional positions

.

In Article 3 on the use of the Italian language in public acts, the 'prohibition of the discretionary use of the feminine or over-extended feminine or any linguistic experimentation is put in black and white. The use of the double form or the universal masculine is permitted, to be understood in a neutral sense and without any sexist connotation'. The aim - as stated in Article 1 - is to preserve the public administration from literal distortions resulting from the need to affirm gender equality in public texts.

Fines

.

A separate chapter is devoted to fines (Article 5): 'Violation of the obligations set out in this law shall result in the imposition of an administrative fine consisting of the payment of a sum of between 1,000 and 5,000 euro'.

Pd: troglodyte proposal

The opposition revolts. "According to the League, in the name of the Italian language we should sanction those who speak Italian correctly. The troglodytes, who would do anything to remove respect for the female gender, read the Treccani'. Pd deputy Michela Di Biase writes this on X. "Therefore, our advocate, turn your merciful eyes on us ... Who knows if Senator Potenti, who proposes to ban the use of the professional feminine, will also want to fine the faithful who recite the Salve Regina,' added Dem Senator Cristina Tajani.

"It is with great indignation that we learn of the League's latest proposal, which through a bill signed by Senator Potenti intends to prohibit the use of the feminine in public acts. Terms such as 'mayor' and 'rector' would be abolished, and those who do not comply would even be subject to a fine of up to five thousand euro," stressed the Senator of the Green and Left Alliance, Aurora Floridia, linguist and promoter of the letter sent to Senate President La Russa and signed by 76 female senators, in which they claim freedom and the right to be called by the feminine gender.
