League squeezed between Vannacci and Zaia, launches campaign for Veneto
Alberto Stefani, the candidate to succeed Luca Zaia, inaugurates his election campaign tonight at the Gran Teatro Geox in Padua. Next to him on stage will be Matteo Salvini, as well as the outgoing governor, who is expected to clarify whether he will run as the Carroccio's leader in all constituencies.
Key points
In the aftermath of the electoral defeat in Tuscany, with the League below 5%, there are few in the Carroccio party who are in solidarity with General Roberto Vannacci, who dominated the electoral campaign and the composition of the lists. He is blamed for the flop percentage, caused, according to many, by the ouster of party colleagues with more seniority and roots in the territory, such as the MEP Susanna Ceccardi. The discontent is stronger especially among the old guard leaders linked to the autonomist and federalist battles.
Discontent in the League
Bisogna riprendere in mano quelli c
Three years after the general election, the Lega continues to revolve around the unresolved issue: regional party based on autonomist demands and territorial representation or national party with a strong right-wing ideological component.
Vannacci: forward even more determined
Vannacci, the expression of the second line, does not hint at self-criticism, indeed he raises the bar: 'Those who did not vote should not complain', he says, assuring that the drop in consensus is only 'a starting point' and adding that 'we never lose, either we win or we learn'. In short, he has no intention of retreating: 'Those who think I will stop do not know me, those who think I will be discouraged are wrong'. On the contrary, now we are going forward 'even more determined'.
Stefani's campaign in Veneto
On the other hand, one who is undoubtedly an expression of autonomist and territorial demands is Alberto Stefani, the candidate to succeed Luca Zaia, who is preparing his electoral campaign for his run for Palazzo Balbi. And many in the Carroccio Party are breathing a sigh of relief that the former general will not also play a role in the election campaign in the land of the Doge. This evening Stefani will inaugurate the election campaign at the Gran Teatro Geox in Padua. Alongside him on stage, in addition to Matteo Salvini (who gave Vannacci a role and space in Tuscany), the outgoing governor, Luca Zaia, who is in the final stages of his 15 consecutive years at the helm of Veneto, will also speak.
