Barack and Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Kamala Harris. "Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to support you and do everything we can to make sure you win this election and make it to the Oval Office," former President Barack Obama told Kamala Harris during a phone call in which his wife also participated, according to video released by CNN. Harris thanked the Obamas for their support and expressed gratitude for their decades-long friendship.

"Oh my God. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me. We can't wait to accomplish this feat with the two of you, Doug and I. And to get out, to be on the road,' the US vice-president said, as reported by CNN. "But most of all, I just want to say that the words you've said and the friendship you've given us over all these years mean more than I can express, so thank you both. It means so much. And we're going to enjoy this too, aren't we?" he added.

The endorsement comes as Harris is establishing himself as his party's likely nominee after President Joe Biden's decision to end his re-election race and endorse Harris's against Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump. It also highlights the friendship and potentially historic bond between the nation's first black president and the first woman, the first woman of colour and the first person of Asian descent to hold the office of vice-president, who is now vying to break these barriers to the presidency as well.
