A second series of “The Pitt” has been announced, but was it really the best series?

And yet… the answer to the question we started with is not entirely obvious, because this year there was another series that would truly have deserved the coveted statuette.

In reality, there are no joint winners in this type of award, but we would not want to risk the fact that *Pluribus* failed to win Best Drama Series going largely unnoticed.

Whilst there is really nothing to be said about the triumph of *Widow’s Bay* in the Best Comedy Series category, the choice in the Miniseries or TV Film category – where *DTF St. Louis* triumphed (though the nominations for “All Her Fault” and “The Beast in Me” were also very strong), amongst the drama productions, “Pluribus” would have deserved the statuette just as much as “The Pitt”, and let’s take a look at why.

A series available on Apple TV+ (the same platform that also features another excellent series, *Slow Horses*, which was nominated for an award), ‘Pluribus’, the new series by Vince Gilligan, the director and producer who first made his mark with ‘The X-Files’ and went on to create two of the most significant series in the history of television: ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’.

Set in Albuquerque, the city that also features prominently in “Breaking Bad”, “Pluribus” centres on the writer Carol Sturka, who discovers she is one of only thirteen people in the world immune to a mysterious virus that has infected the entire human race, merging it into a single collective mind.

Everyone around her seems extremely happy and carefree, and they’re trying to persuade her to join this huge global group.

The plot alone gives us an insight into the ambition of this science fiction series, which offers a brilliant exploration of certain aspects of the contemporary world: the collective mind can be interpreted as a powerful allegory of a single way of thinking, akin to certain artificial intelligence algorithms that ultimately dehumanise those who come into contact with it.

Even the need to appear happy at all costs seems a truly realistic symptom of a society forced to wear masks at all times, and in which any way of thinking that diverges from the prevailing norms is something to be rooted out as soon as possible and branded a threat. Much of contemporary America can also be seen in the first series of this show which, although it did win a few awards (including the well-deserved Best Actress in a Drama Series award for Rhea Seehorn), it would have been a bold move to also award it Best Drama Series overall, despite the immense merits – indisputable and already mentioned – of *The Pitt*.
