The Pope went on to renew his appeal, which was met with a long round of applause from the faithful at Castel Gandolfo, “so that the repeated acts of violence against the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank may cease, and I urgently call on the international community to ensure that progress is made towards a two-state solution for a just and lasting peace”.

“This week,” the Holy Father continued, “the Mediterranean Games will begin in Taranto, involving various countries from Africa, Asia and Europe that are part of the Mediterranean region. I hope that this sporting event will be a sign of peace and brotherhood amongst the peoples of this region and of the whole world.”
