Farewell to Bergoglio, the Argentinean, Jesuit Pope who revolutionised the Church and took the name Francis, inspired by St Francis of Assisi, symbol of poverty. The announcement of the death of Francesco was made on the morning of Monday 21 April in the chapel of Casa Santa Marta by the camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell. Next to him were Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, Substitute Monsignor Edgar Pena Parra and Master of Ceremonies Monsignor Diego Ravelli.
The Pope died of stroke cerebri, coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse, according to the medical certificate. Francis was suffering from 'a previous episode of acute respiratory failure in bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia, multiple bronchiectasis, arterial hypertension, type II diabetes'. The ascertainment of death 'was made through electrocardio-anatomical recording'.
The Pope's will was ready by June 2022
.The press room released the Pope's testament that was ready by 29 June 2022, "feeling that the sunset of my earthly life is approaching and with lively hope in Eternal Life," Pope Francis wrote even then.
"I ask that my mortal remains be laid to rest waiting for the day of resurrection in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore," the Pope indicated in his will. "I ask that my tomb be prepared in the niche in the side aisle between the Pauline Chapel (Salus Populi Romani Chapel) and the Sforza Chapel of the aforementioned Papal Basilica". The tomb "must be in the earth; simple, without particular decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus".
The will closes with an invocation that 'the Lord will give the deserved reward to those who have loved me and will continue to pray for me. The suffering that became present in the last part of my life I offered to the Lord for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples'.
